Stockholm, Sweden — Sweden’s largest solar park, with an installed capacity of 64 MWp, was inaugurated yesterday outside Hallstavik in Stockholm County. The solar park was built and is owned and operated by leading Swedish solar developer and independent power producer Alight, and was made possible through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with the grocery group Axfood. The electricity produced is certified under the “Bra Miljöval” (Good Environmental Choice) label and will cover approximately 15% of Axfood’s annual electricity consumption.
The solar park, which Axfood has named “Ax-el,” is now the largest solar park in Sweden. It covers 82 hectares (equivalent to 117 football fields) and is expected to produce 63 GWh annually, corresponding to the yearly electricity consumption of about 12,600 average-sized homes.
Warren Campbell, CEO of Alight, says: “We’re very proud of our collaboration with Axfood and that together, we’ve now commissioned Sweden’s largest solar park. This shows how the business sector is taking responsibility and driving the expansion of renewable energy, which benefits Sweden’s collective energy transition. Five years ago, Alight commissioned Sweden’s first large-scale solar park, and it feels fantastic to reach a new milestone by inaugurating a solar park that produces five times more electricity. It’s proof of the strong growth of solar power, and there is still significant untapped potential.”
Under the PPA, Alight built, owns and operates the solar park, while Axfood commits to purchasing all the electricity produced for at least ten years.
Simone Margulies, CEO and Group President of Axfood, says: “To succeed with the green transition, it’s important to add more solar energy to the market, which we’re now doing by commissioning Sweden’s largest solar park. For us, this is another step in our climate work, which has previously included switching to renewable electricity and transitioning to fossil-free transportation.”
The electricity produced at the solar park is environmentally certified according to the Bra Miljöval criteria, which include requirements such as recycling of solar panels and location outside protected natural areas.
The project was made possible through a green loan from SEB. The grid operator is Vattenfall Eldistribution AB.
